ILS winter program kicks off with a talk about gestures in traditional Iranian storytelling

Dr. Zeinab Laleh Khosravi from the Damghan University (Iran) gave a fascinating talk about co-speech gestures in Naqqāli, a traditional storytelling style. She compared the way of how two Naqqāli masters employ gestures during the telling of the 10th century story of Rostam and his son Sohrab.

Dr. Laleh Khosravi started the winter program with A Comparative Study on Two Major Schools of Naqqāli. How does Naqqāli, as an Iranian Traditional Storytelling Style, develop through co-speech gestures? In her guest lecture she compared the use of gestures by the two masters Torabi and Saeedi, who are commonly believed to focus distinctly on body movements and verbal art. The audience was intrigued by the culturally rich and interesting data and discussed lively afterwards.

The picture - a slight of the presentation - illustrates how both Master Torabi and Master Saeedi differently embody one of the key moments of the story.
