Welcome to the Institute for European Studies

The Viadrina Institute for European Studies (IFES) conducts interdisciplinary research on social, political and cultural figurations on the European continent and its global entanglements. The institute focuses both on historical and contemporary processes of Europeanisation, paying particular attention to their inherent complexities and ambivalences. Through its research, the IFES seeks to contribute to a deeper understanding of Europe and to foster a critical perspective within the field of European studies.

New edition of the Working Paper Series

Starting with Sonja Priebu's contribution on "Post-transformational trajectories in Eastern Europe", IFES is relaunching its Working Paper Series. The IFES Working Papers Series serves to disseminate the initial results of ongoing research projects prior to publication in order to promote the exchange of ideas and scientific debate.

In her two-year teaching and research project 'Transformations towards sustainability in the state of Brandenburg', Amelie Kutter and her students are investigating how actors in the region implement or contest sustainability policy in the areas of water, forest, energy and food.

As part of the lunch lecture series, Sascha Münnich and Randall Halle will discuss the outcome of the US elections from a social and cultural studies perspective with each other and with the audience. The discussion will be held in English, questions can be asked in German.
