Welcome to the Institute of European Studies

The Viadrina Institute for European Studies conducts interdisciplinary research into social, political and cultural figurations on the European continent and its global interdependencies. The focus is on historical and contemporary processes of Europeanisation, including their inherent ambivalences. In this sense, IFES research aims to provide impulses for a well-founded reflection on Europe and to establish a critical perspective within European studies.

Foucault's Reception 40 Years After

On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of Michel Foucault's death in 1984, IFES is organising two activities dealing with his work and its ongoing and productive reception at the Viadrina as well as in Central and Eastern Europe. Border controls between Frankfurt (Oder) and Słubice - A scientific survey

In cooperation with the Viadrina Center B/ORDERS IN MOTION, this contemporary analysis at lunchtime/ Research Factory is dedicated to the ongoing controls at the German-Polish border and especially in Frankfurt (Oder). With Dr Markus Engler (DeZiM) and Lea Sophie Christinck (EUV/ DeZiM), authors of an expert report for the Green Party parliamentary group, we will discuss the status of border controls and their effects.
