Welcome to the Institute for European Studies

The Viadrina Institute for European Studies (IFES) conducts interdisciplinary research on social, political and cultural figurations on the European continent and its global entanglements. The institute focuses both on historical and contemporary processes of Europeanisation, paying particular attention to their inherent complexities and ambivalences. Through its research, the IFES seeks to contribute to a deeper understanding of Europe and to foster a critical perspective within the field of European studies.

IFES publishes its Annual Report 2024, which summarizes the activities at the Institute for European Studies over the past year.

New book release

The book edited by Sonja Priebus and Timm Beichelt, "The political systems in Eastern Europe: institutions, actors and processes" has been published by Springer VS. It offers a comparative account of the political systems of all states in Central, Eastern and South-Eastern Europe in 22 chapters dedicated to the respective countries.

The Talk Series Human & Planet provides a permanent and flexible format for continuous reflection and exchange on questions of the socio-ecological crisis and climate change from a multidisciplinary perspective in teaching and research.

ValEUs Panel Discussion: European Values and the handling of conflicts in Eastern Europe and the Middle East

Dr Nina Sajic (University of Banja Luka) and Dr Ayhan Kaya (İstanbul Bilgi University) will discuss a specific dimension of European values: the handling of conflicts in Eastern Europe and the Middle East. The speakers will elaborate on the role of the EU in these regions, focusing on the question of to what extent the EU lives up to the values it promises in its founding documents.
