Junior Professorship for Theories of Arts and Media - Prof. Dr. André Rottmann
Junior Professorship for Theories of Arts and Media
The Professor for Theories of Art and Media is dedicated to the manifestations and debates of modern and contemporary art. In research and teaching with a focus on Europe, North and South America, material practices, specific discourses and aesthetic forms are analyzed as well as their institutional, social, political and technological frameworks.
Histories and theories of the visual arts, but also of art criticism and curatorial practice, are not viewed as isolated phenomena, but are always historically situated in relation to other cultural formations and fields of knowledge. In particular, the work of the Professor intertwines art historical and media studies issues and subject areas: Western modern art from the 1860s onwards is already inextricably linked or confronted with the industrial processes of mechanical reproducibility. In particular, however, contemporary art since the 1960s - which in a global context has opened up to an expanded field of forces beyond the traditional spaces and places of art and at the same time has transcended genre boundaries - is caught up in a media-technological dispositif that is as diverse as it is expansive. This applies all the more to the forms of articulation of art under the high-tech conditions of the digital present and its algorithmic calculations.
Prof. Dr. André Rottmann
The Professor's current research focuses on the critical relationship between art and the environment, "institutional critique" and restitution debates, sculpture history and "assemblage" theories. The theoretically oriented examination of the arts and their reflexive, cognitive, critical and mnemonic potentials in various geo-political contexts, which has been expanded from an interdisciplinary and cultural studies perspective, makes a decisive contribution to sharpening the contemporary diagnostic view of our ecological, post-colonial and media situation.
